Days 3&4 with our au pair: Much better indeed!

Anna has already spent 4 full days with us and things feel so much smoother and easier now.

 The boys are really comfortable with her. They listen to her and follow her guidance. She is really good with manners and discipline. She is also very patient and rarely raises her voice. She is firm but kind.

 In only 4 days, Anna has managed to cover most of the boys' daily routine:

 - Change Ryan's nappies (wet and soiled nappies)

 - Get the kids dressed and teeth brushed

 - Give the boys breakfast

 - Put Ryan to bed (for his daytime nap)

 - Serve lunch and dinner to the kids

 - Play with the kids

 - Give the kids a bath

 - Encourage the kids to tidy up the toy room at the end of each day

 I am so proud of her! She has done so well!

 We just have a couple of things to work on but I think we are almost there:

 - I need to prepare a meal planner so Anna knows what to give Ryan for lunch when I am back at work next week (Dylan will be back at school himself and will be having the school dinners). Nothing too complicated but I just need to make sure that it is something that she can cook and that she would also enjoy eating.

 - We also need to work on the morning routine to make sure that Dylan is ready for school on time. We haven't quite worked out that one yet.

 - And I need to make sure that Anna is ready nd has had breakfast before the boys wake up (only because right now, poor Anna does not get a chance to eat her breakfast or even have a morning wash because the boys don't give her a chance to).

 - Finally, I need to take Anna and the kids for walks because we are both concerned about road safety. I feel that she is not always careful when she crosses a road and she feels very nervous about crossing a road with the two boys. It is just a little bit of practice from both sides: I need to stop worrying and she needs to gain confidence.

 I feel so much happier now and I know she does too from the conversation we had tonight.

 Relief! It is finally coming together :).

Baby shower gift for the dad-to-be

A few weeks ago, I organised a baby shower for my sister-in-law. She is due at the beginning of December. I am going to be the Godmother and I am really chuffed about it. Because all the family was gathered together for the weekend to attend the baby shower, I thought I could organise something for the dad-to-be too (not a baby shower as such, but a few games and a gift). Around dinner time, we played three games: - Blindfolded baby changing game - Pin the dummy in the baby's mouth game - Name that poop game Blindfolded baby changing game The aim of the game is for the dad-to-be to dress a doll. The trick is that he must be blindfolded. It was amusing to watch. Tip: If the parents-to-be are having a baby boy, spray dad's face with water when he is putting the nappy on (use a child's water pistol). He will not expect it! Someone should prepare him for it :). Choosing an au pair: Definitely not an easy task

So! We have decided that having an au pair would be more suitable for our lifestyle.  Trevor (my husband) works continental shifts - days or nights. I have an office-based job but I frequently need to travel for work, which means that I need a bit of flexibility when it comes to childcare. Also we have no family around so our childcare solution needs to be foolproof. Our preference is for a French au pair because we have some French relatives and we are trying to raise our kids bilingual French/English. Now the hardest part... How do you find an au pair and how do you trust her with your children? Au pairs are not CRB checked or OFSTED regulated. You know nothing about them: you do not know where they are from, what their background is. They are young and most of them have no experience with children... For me personally, this is a deal breaker. I have put off the au pair idea for years because of that but if I am honest with myself it is the most ideal solution for us.

Day 1 with our au pair: Overwhelming day to say the least

Yesterday was our first day with our au pair Anna. We went to France to visit family and also to pick her up this weekend. She happens to live in the same town as my mum's family (it is not a coincidence though, she was introduced to me by a relative). I mentioned it in a previous post. Not because she is a difficult person (on the contrary she is really lovely). It is just that I cannot really do small talks and find it hard to converse with new people (particularly when it is at length). But I think we did well :).
